Politics Nice…

There are three kinds of people:

  1. Political Fanatics – one of their top identities is being a member of the _____________ Party.  They will eventually get around to bringing up the subject in any conversation.  In extreme cases, if you don’t agree with them – you are a very bad person and maybe suspect of being a “moral” person.
  2. Political Apathetics- they don’t know and they don’t care.  They haven’t voted in years.  They sense the futility of ideologies and political hoopla.  CNN or FOX is not near any of their “favorites” channels.
  3. Political Patriots- they always vote and then make the most of daily life.  They may have watched a debate.  They know the major difference between party platforms.  But politics is just one slice of their diverse pie of life.  Tolerance and forbearance are their shield against zealots.  But they love their country and are grateful for their citizenship.

I like to watch Football on TV.  But I am not obsessed by it.  My wife leaves the room if a football game is on.  My wife likes to watch a certain soap opera.  I can’t relate to the drama at all.  It is just for the young and restless – I am neither.

That’s the way it is in this election season.  Some sit and watch CNN or FOX TV all the time.  Others leave the room.  Here’s the deal – both politics and sports can become idolatry.  Whatever eats up your time, energy, and passion other than God and his kingdom is idolatry.  And I can’t begin to list the countless “idols” that have enslaved people.

And if it becomes a mean wedge between people and paints “the other” as stupid, foolish, or a a bad person, it is not fitting for the building up of the body of Christ.  Kingdoms come and kingdoms go.  Winning teams come and losing teams go.  “His kingdom is forever.”

So mark your ballot and say a prayer.  Matthew 6:33
