I am always astounded by the liturgy of our Maundy Thursday Tennebrae service.
There is no sermon after holy communion. We only read the gospel lessons from the last hours of his days.
The lights in the sanctuary go dim.
They all eventually go out accept for the candle on the communion table.
Then I read Christ’s cry of abandonment. I snuff out the big candle.
The people leave in darkness.
And in silence.

Christmas Eve and Easter Services are truly inspirational. However, with the gospel readings, especially that impassioned cry, a sanctuary gone black, a congregation stunned silent, it is the Maundy Thursday service that most deeply stirs my soul.
Pastor Steve,
Being a care-giver, I can only remember those soul moving services of years gone by. Still feeling his anguish, sometimes I cried on the drive home. I wish I could have been there for yours – sounds beautiful and heart wrenching.. Thank you for helping me to remember. A blessed Easter to you and your flock… B.J.
